Duplicate Detection

Before renaming, Rename Pro detects family types that would produce the same name under your naming rules — revealing types that do the same job under different names, so you can consolidate and clean up your model.

How It Works

Detection is rule-based: Rename Pro applies your configured naming rules to every family type in the model and compares the results. If two or more types resolve to the same name, they are flagged as duplicates.

This means Rename Pro does not scan or compare parameters directly — your naming rules are the detection mechanism. Types that share the same underlying properties (and therefore produce the same rule-based name) are surfaced as candidates for cleanup.

For example, "Arial", "Arial 1", and "Arial Copy 1" might all resolve to "Arial - 3mm" under your naming rules — exposing redundant types ready for cleanup.

Workflow

Identifying and Cleaning Up Duplicates

1. Configure your naming rules in the Name Rules Panel for the relevant categories.
2. Run the name preview to generate rule-based names for all family types.
3. Rename Pro highlights any types that resolve to the same name — these are your duplicates.
4. Review the flagged types and decide which to keep. Consolidate usages in the model before deleting the redundant types.
5. Once cleaned up, proceed with renaming.

Why Clean Up Before Renaming

Renaming duplicates without consolidating them first results in multiple types sharing the same name after the operation. This causes ambiguity in the model and may lead to coordination issues across disciplines. Cleaning up beforehand ensures each name maps to exactly one type.
