Revit Name Automation for Consistent Naming Conventions

Rename Pro — Revit Naming Convention Automation Add-in

Community-Driven

Automated Type Naming

Since 2016, the Revit community has been requesting automated type naming from parameters. This feature request has significant community support, but Autodesk hasn't implemented it yet.

So We Built It

Rename Pro automates naming conventions using your parameters, structural layers, and shared parameters. It works with 40+ Revit categories and handles batch operations.

No AI, just parameter-based naming rules.
No subscription, license is yours forever.

Extensive Revit category coverage for naming automation

Extensive Category Coverage

Automate naming across virtually all Revit® Categories, ensuring compatibility with current and future versions.

Define consistent naming rules for Loadable Families, System Families (like Walls, Floors, Dimensions, Text Notes), and Model In-Place elements. Rename Pro supports categories from both new and previous Revit® releases.

Layered wall naming convention example in Revit

Unique Layered Naming Convention

Generate clear Family Type names incorporating structural layer data like materials and thicknesses.

Instantly understand element composition. Rename Pro uses structural layer information (materials, widths, etc.) to create unique, recognizable names for complex types like Walls, Floors, Roofs, and Ceilings. Eliminate guesswork and quickly identify the correct Type by its structure.

For example, Wall Type new names could be:

Int220 Pla10//Bri200//Pla10
Int225 Til5/Pla10//Bri150/Air50//Pla10
Ext460 Con200/Air76/Air0/Ply19//Met152//Vap0/Gyp13
Ext202 Fin22/Woo25//Str15/Str112/Str15//Fin13

Shared parameter integration for Revit family types

Shared Parameter Integration

Leverage your project's Shared Parameters for highly flexible and standardized element naming.

Incorporate custom data from your Shared Parameters directly into your naming rules.

This significantly enhances naming flexibility and helps enforce company-specific standards consistently across all projects.

Auto Rename Revit elements on document open

Auto Rename

Automatically apply your saved naming rules to Revit elements the moment a project document is opened.

Ensure automatic compliance with office standards without manual intervention. Auto Rename can be configured to run globally or be scoped to a specific list of project files.

Choose between silent execution to rename elements in the background, or interactive execution which displays a preview showing old names, new names, and any generation errors before renaming.

Duplicate family type detection in Revit

Duplicate Detection

Clean up duplicate family types - detect types doing the same job under different names before renaming.

Detection is rule-based: if two types resolve to the same name under your naming rules, they are flagged as duplicates - for example, "Arial", "Arial 1", and "Arial Copy 1" all resolving to "Arial - 3mm". Read more in Help

Team deployment of naming convention settings

Easy Deployment across Teams

Deploy consistent naming standards across your office with portable JSON and admin controls.

Rename Pro stores all configurations in standard, portable JSON files. This allows for straightforward backups, simple deployment across multiple workstations, and discipline-specific rule customization (e.g., separate rules for Architecture, Structure, and MEP).

Admin Settings Lock: BIM managers can lock these shared settings files with a password. Standard users can instantly run naming automation to stay compliant, but are prevented from altering categories, prefix/suffix values, or color/value replacement settings.

Usage
Lite is intended for personal use, or solo commercial work as a sole practitioner or freelancer working alone. Any company, business, or organization with more than one person requires a Pro license.

Pro is a single-user commercial license: one person may use it on up to three of their own devices — for example office desktop, laptop, and home PC — the same way each person needs their own Revit license. It is not shared across people; each additional person in a company needs their own Pro license.

Device Limit
Lite license tier can be used on a single device.

Pro license tier allows you to use the software on up to 3 devices.

Upgrades for future Revit® versions
Upgrades are completely optional. You can continue using your current Revit® versions indefinitely.

When new Revit® versions are released, you can upgrade whenever you want — or not at all. Your existing license remains fully functional.

Lite license tier users can upgrade for free.
Pro license tier users can purchase upgrades for $19 in addition to the versions they selected at purchase.

Auto Rename
Automatically apply saved naming rules when opening a document. Target all projects or a custom list. Run silently or with a rename preview.
Group Renaming Support
Rename model groups, detail groups, and attached detail groups via the Categories tab.
Material Sub-Rules
Extract and combine multiple parameters from materials (like Structural Material) into a single naming rule.
Merge Compound Layers
Automatically merge identical adjacent compound structure layers and display the layer count in generated names.
Replace Values & Colors
Map RGB color codes to readable text and define custom find-and-replace pairs for naming parameters.
Easy Deployment & Shared Settings
Pro license tier users can create, export, and share portable JSON naming convention settings files within their team. Effortlessly deploy consistent naming conventions across your office or tailor configurations for specific teams to roll out standardized naming conventions company-wide.

Lite license tier users store all settings locally — including naming convention configurations — and will lose them if they reinstall Windows.
Admin Settings Lock
Lock shared settings files with a password to prevent standard users from modifying naming rules, categories, and prefix/suffix configurations.
Settings Cloud Sync*
Upcoming
Pro license tier users will soon be able to store and sync their settings in the cloud, making them accessible from anywhere.

Lite license tier users will not have access to this feature.

About Us

About Rename Pro

Rename Pro revolutionizes naming conventions in Autodesk Revit by automating the naming process, ensuring consistency and accuracy across your models.

Building on the success of our Rename Elements and Rename Family Types add-ins — both available on the Autodesk App Store — Rename Pro represents the next evolution, combining and expanding their capabilities into a comprehensive, unified solution.

This powerful tool eliminates the need for manual input of Family Type names, streamlining workflows not only for walls, floors, roofs, doors, and windows but also for a wide array of Revit categories including text notes, dimensions, and more. Each element name can be customized for font, size, color, and other parameters, offering unmatched control and precision.

Design Philosophy

App does not only have to look good; it must also feel intuitive and deliver great user experience. Our user interface and user experience design prioritizes seamless integration with Revit's native interface. We deliberately avoid flashy icons and separate tabs—Rename Pro lives quietly in the Revit Add-Ins tab, merging with the existing design language to minimize cognitive load.

The result? A familiar, intuitive experience that feels like a natural extension of Revit, not a jarring addition. Users can focus on their work, not on learning a new interface.

Who Benefits

  • BIM Managers enforcing naming standards
  • Architects & Engineers needing consistency
  • Teams sharing naming conventions
