Parameters Panel

The Parameters panel lists all available Revit parameters for the currently selected category.

Overview

The Parameters panel is a crucial component of the Main Settings Panel, serving as the primary source for all available Revit parameters that can be utilized in naming conventions. It provides a comprehensive view of the data fields associated with the selected Family Type category, allowing users to identify and select the specific parameters they wish to incorporate into their naming rules.

The panel dynamically updates to reflect the parameters of the currently selected category, ensuring that users always have access to the relevant data for their specific needs. This dynamic behavior is essential for maintaining accuracy and relevance in the renaming process, as different categories possess different parameters.

Section Header

At the top of the panel, a dynamic label displays the total number of available parameters for the active category, alongside the category's name (e.g., 43 Parameters for Walls).

Parameters Grid

Columns

Column Description
Row Indicator Shows a triangle icon () for the currently selected row, and an open circle () for custom Shared Parameters.
Parameter The Revit parameter name (e.g., Absorptance, Width, Fire Rating).

Parameter Groups

Parameters are categorized into sections corresponding directly to standard Revit parameter groups (e.g., Analytical Properties, Construction, Graphics). Custom Shared Parameters are also placed within the specific groups to which they were originally assigned when created in revit Document or in Family.

Shared Parameters

To help distinguish them visually, Shared Parameters are displayed with a empty circle () row indicator.

Important Note on Shared Parameters: Shared Parameters are aggregated and displayed for all Family Types within the selected category. This means that if a Shared Parameter exists in at least one Family Type, it will appear in the list.

If you include a Shared Parameter in your naming convention, but it is not present on a specific Family Type being renamed, the parameter's value will simply be left blank for that Family Type.

Example: If Family Type "Door1" and Family Type "Door2" both belong to the "Doors" category, and "Door1" has a Shared Parameter named "SP_1" while "Door2" has a different Shared Parameter named "SP_2", the Parameters list will display both "SP_1" and "SP_2" when the Doors category is selected.

Transfer Controls

Located between the Parameters panel and the Name Rules panel are two arrow buttons (Left Arrow and Right Arrow). These controls allow you to seamlessly transfer parameters back and forth between the two panels.

Adding a Parameter to Name Rules

To use a parameter in your renaming convention:

  1. Select a parameter row in the Parameters grid.
  2. Click the right-pointing arrow Right Arrow to add it to the Name Rules panel.

Tip: You can also instantly add a parameter by double-clicking anywhere on its row.

Removing a Parameter from Name Rules

To remove a parameter from your renaming convention:

  1. In the Name Rules panel, select the specific parameter row or any cell within it.
  2. Click the left-pointing arrow Left Arrow to remove it from the rules and effectively return it to the Parameters panel.

Tip: You can also instantly remove a parameter by double-clicking its row header in the Name Rules panel.

Shortcuts

  • Scroll to Parameter: Type a letter key (e.g., W) to instantly scroll down to the first parameter starting with that letter (e.g., Width). Type same letter key again to move selection to next paramter starting with same letter.
