Getting Started with Rename Pro Welcome to Rename Pro! This guide will help you get up and running quickly. Installation Download the installer: From your License Key email From the Updates page. Close Revit. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. If you get a SmartScreen warning, click "Run anyway". Open Revit. You will see dialog "Security - Unsigned Add-In" Click "Always Load" to always load the add-in. Activation In depth about license activation read in License Activation page. Each row in the Name Rules panel represents a segment of the generated name, composed of parameter values and their optional formatting. The order of the rows directly corresponds to the order of segments in the generated name: the first row represents the first segment, the second row the second segment, and so on. Section Header The section header displays the name of the current category and the total number of name rules (rows) defined for it. Footer Controls Prefix Identifier / Suffix Identifier The Prefix Identifier and Suffix Identifier are used to preserve specific parts of an existing name. If a prefix identifier (e.g., ...) is defined, the renaming algorithm will retain the original name up to those characters and only replace the portion of the name that follows. Conversely, if a suffix identifier is defined, the algorithm will update the beginning of the name and preserve everything from the suffix identifier onwards. Preview Header The Preview Header displays a count of how many Family Types will be renamed. The count is updated in real-time as you add or remove checked Categories. Preview Grid Columns Column Description Row Indicator ▶ for the currently selected row Checkbox Check/uncheck a Family Type to include or exclude it from renaming. If you uncheck a Family Type, its ID will be stored in the settings, and this Family Type will not be renamed until it is checked again. It displays your active license tier, the current settings file location, and the template name. It also provides the primary controls for saving and managing your configurations. Controls (Left to Right) License Badge The License Badge indicates your currently active license tier (e.g., Lite, Pro, Pro+, or Autodesk Pro). Update Button If a new version or an update for a newer Revit release is available, an Update button will appear next to the License Badge. Clicking this button opens a prompt asking if you'd like to update Rename Pro to the latest version. Name Generation Time The Name generation: 561.2ms readout displays the time it took to generate all of the new name previews based on your current rules. Settings File Path The path display (e.g., C:\RenameProTemplate\RenameProSettings.json) shows the exact location of the currently active .json settings file on your computer. Template Name Users on the Pro, Pro+, or Autodesk Pro tiers have the ability to maintain multiple distinct settings files, allowing different naming conventions for different projects or disciplines (e.g., one for Architecture, another for MEP). The Template text box displays the name of your current setup. To rename the active template, simply edit the text in this box. Additional Commands (▼) The downward-pointing triangle (▼) opens a dropdown menu containing additional commands to manage your settings. Options include: Save As, Export, Load, Reset, and About. Save Button The Save button becomes active whenever you make changes to your settings. Clicking it saves your current configuration to the active .json file. It works similarly to the Name Rules Panel, with additional options specific to compound structures. Window Layout The dialog is split into two grids: Left grid — available parameters from the selected Family Type's compound structure. Right grid — parameters added to the compound rules. Between the grids are the Add and Remove buttons used to move parameters in and out of the rules. Duplicate Detection Before renaming, Rename Pro detects family types that would produce the same name under your naming rules — revealing types that do the same job under different names, so you can consolidate and clean up your model. How It Works Detection is rule-based: Rename Pro applies your configured naming rules to every family type in the model and compares the results. If two or more types resolve to the same name, they are flagged as duplicates. This means Rename Pro does not scan or compare parameters directly — your naming rules are the detection mechanism. Types that share the same underlying properties (and therefore produce the same rule-based name) are surfaced as candidates for cleanup. For example, "Arial", "Arial 1", and "Arial Copy 1" might all resolve to "Arial - 3mm" under your naming rules — exposing redundant types ready for cleanup. License Activation & Management Learn how to activate your license, manage connected devices, and upgrade between Lite and Pro versions. Overview Rename Pro uses a device-based licensing model to ensure compliant usage. Each license is bound to: A specific Rename Pro license tier (Lite or Pro). A defined number of allowed device slots (concurrency limits). Specific Autodesk Revit versions assigned to the license (e.g., Revit 2026). You can manage all activation settings, view license statuses, and configure privacy options directly inside the add-in via the About dialog, when launching Rename Pro in through Revit Add-Ins tab. Activating a License To activate your copy of Rename Pro, follow these steps: Open Autodesk Revit and launch the Rename Pro add-in from the Add-Ins tab in the Revit ribbon toolbar. In the About dialog (which displays automatically on first launch, or can be opened from the settings icon), locate the License input field. Copy the license key sent in your license confirmation email. Paste it into the License Key input field and click Activate. Once verified, the license status indicator will turn green and display Valid. License Types Lite Version The Lite version gives you full access to all standard naming convention rules, duplicate indication, and parameter configurations. However, it does not include the ability to export or load your naming configurations. This means settings must be manually configured on each local machine. If you reinstall Windows, you will lose all your settings and will need to configure them again. You can use same license key on only one device at the time. Pro Version The Pro version includes everything in Lite, plus the crucial ability to Export and Load Settings to JSON. This allows you to export your configured rules to external files so you can easily deploy, share, and enforce standardized naming conventions across your entire team or company. You will also be able to backup your settings and restore them after reinstalling Windows. You will also be able to use same liecnse key on up to 3 devices at the time. Device Management Each license allows a maximum number of concurrent active devices. In the About dialog, the Devices row displays your usage in the format Used / Allowed (for example, 1/1 means one device is registered under a license key that only allows one device). If your device count exceeds the allowed limit: The count will turn red, indicating a Device Limit Exceeded error. You must either log out of another device to free up a slot, or upgrade your license to Pro to add more slots. Revit Version Assignments Rename Pro licenses are bound to specific Revit versions. In the About dialog, the Revit Versions dropdown lists all Revit versions assigned to your key (e.g., 2026 - Assigned). If you attempt to run the add-in on a Revit version not assigned to your license key, the software will display a warning and run in a restricted state until the version is assigned or upgraded. Upgrading Your License If you need to add more device slots, assign new Revit versions, or upgrade from the Lite version to the Full version: Open the About Dialog inside Rename Pro. Click the Upgrade button next to the Revit Versions dropdown. This opens the Upgrade page on our website with your license key pre-filled, where you can select and purchase your desired upgrades. Logging Out If you need to transfer Rename Pro to a different computer or free up an active slot on the activation server: Click the Log Out button at the bottom-left of the About dialog. This deactivates the license key on the current computer and immediately restores an available slot on the activation server. Troubleshooting License Shows as Invalid Make sure the license key is pasted exactly as received in your email, with no trailing spaces. Verify that your computer has an active internet connection. Device Limit Exceeded If your device status turns red (e.g., 2/1), open Rename Pro on one of your other active devices and click the Log Out button to release the slot. Alternatively, click the Upgrade button to purchase additional slots. Revit Version Not Assigned Open the Revit Versions dropdown inside the About dialog and verify if your active version is assigned.
